- +["Prvá zmienka o Banskej Bystrici ako slobodnom kráľovskom meste pochádza z roku 1255, keď jej dal vtedajší uhorský kráľ Belo IV. práva na ťažbu surovín a takisto mestské práva. Ťažila sa hlavne meď, železo a striebro. Do mesta sa tak koncom 13. storočia nasťahovali Nemci, ako názov mesta sa vtedy používal Neusohl (Nový Zvolen) (Klimová, 2002). Banská Bystrica sa vďaka prisťahovalcom rozvíjala. V roku 1494 tu vznikla spoločnosť Ungarischer Handel (Uhorský obchod), nazývaná aj Der Neusohler Kupferhandel, ktorá sa v 16. storočí stala jednou z najväčších a najmodernejších ťažobných spoločností tej doby. Pri¬spela k výraznému rozvoju baníctva, hutníctva i dopravy, ktorý zasiahol celú sféru stredovekého života. V rokoch 1525 – 1526 sa tu uskutočnilo banícke povstanie, ktoré skončilo neúspechom pre baníkov. V roku 1720 v meste fungovalo 149 cechových dielní, v roku 1784 ich bolo 502 čím sa mesto stalo tretím najdôležitejším na Slovensku v cechovej produkcii. Po vyčerpaní zásoby medi, sa výroba preorientovala na spracovanie dreva a výrobu papiera, ďalším impulzom rozvoja sa stala priemyselná revolúcia. V roku 1908 bolo vydané kutacie právo na ťažbu zlata v Harmanci a zmluva s mestom bola uzavretá v roku 1922. Vykopali sa tu prieskumné šachty a rôzne štôlne, ale po krátkej dobe ťažby projekt kvôli nerentabilnosti zanikol. Mesto zostalo obchodným a peňažným centrom, dobudovaním železničnej trate Zvolen – Vrútky a Banská Bystrica – Červená Skala vzrástol jeho význam ako dopravného uzla. Vzniklo niekoľko menších kovovýrobných, potravinárskych a stavebných podnikov, ale zaniklo niekoľko podnikov z predchádzajúceho obdobia (nábytková tová¬reň, textilky) (Toranová, 1983)."]
